On Friday 27 June 2025, the UN side event “Protecting lawyers to ensure access to justice – The New Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer” will take place in Room XXV of the Palais des Nations in Geneva, and online.
Lawyers for Lawyers is pleased to co-sponsor this event. Our Executive Director, Sophie de Graaf, will join a panel of distinguished speakers to share perspectives on the risks lawyers face globally and how international standards like the new Council of Europe Convention can help protect the legal profession.
Lawyers are essential in defending the rights of individuals, including those whose rights have been violated. The Convention calls on states to ensure lawyers can carry out their professional duties without threats, harassment, intimidation or interference.
Panelists will explore the current global context, highlight good practices, and discuss the vital role of bar associations in defending the independence of the legal profession.
The event is organised by the IBA Human Rights Institute, CCBE, Council of Europe, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and co-sponsored by Lawyers for Lawyers and others.
A flyer with the full programme is available here.
