Lawyer Deniz Sürgüt arrested while monitoring mass-arrest

In August 2015, a mass-arrest took place in Idil, carried out by special units of the police. Human rights lawyer Deniz Sürgüt, member of the Lawyers Association for Freedom, was at the request of relatives of those arrested present in Idil to monitor the situation. He was reporting on the crimes committed by the police during the arrests. Relatives of those arrested had indicated earlier that during the raids in homes and offices, children had been the victim of abuse by members of the arrest teams. Deniz Sürgüt was arrested while conducting his activities, on suspicion of “membership of illegal organization” and ” carrying and commercializing guns”. He was allegedly subject of torture by the police. The Lawyers Association for Freedom issued a press statement about his arrest.
