The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders has been informed about the judicial harassment of nine Turkish lawyers. They have been arrested and saw their houses raided by the police. The lawyers were arrested on charges of “membership of an illegal organisation”. The Observatory draws the attention of the Turkish authorities on the Principle of the United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers (attached), in particular Principles 16, 18, and 20 on Guarantees for the functioning of lawyers, and Principle 23 on Freedom of expression and association.
