Buzurgmehr Yorov was arrested for representing 13 opposition Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan on September 28, 2015. The Tajik government had banned this party and declared it a terrorist organization. Yorov is at least the fourth Tajik lawyer authorities have arrested on these charges. All of them were locked away because of their clients. The United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers states that lawyers “shall not be identified with their clients or their clients’ causes as a result of discharging their functions” and that they must be able “to perform all their professional functions without intimidation, hindrance, harassment or improper interference.” Furthermore, lawyers “shall not suffer, or be threatened with, prosecution or administrative, economic or other sanctions for any action taken in accordance with recognized professional duties, standards or ethics.”
