This article seeks to examine the minimum standards of the rights of the convicts during imprisonment. It refers to the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers when discussing the International and regional standards of the rights of prisoners. The Basic Principles recognize that professional associations of lawyers have a vital role to play in providing legal services to all in need of them, and cooperating with governmental and other institutions in furthering the ends of justice and public interest. Government should establish efficient procedures and responsive mechanisms for effective and equal access to a lawyer and set ut special safeguards in criminal justice matters, as well as guarantees for the functioning of lawyers.
