The present report by Amnesty International examines alleged human rights violations by law enforcement officials in Greece including allegations of torture and other ill-treatment during arrest or detention, misuse of firearms, excessive use of force and other violations in the policing of demonstrations. In the report, Greek authorities acknowledge the existence of human rights abuses by law enforcement officials, however incidents are considered isolated incidents rather than part of a systemic problem. Amnesty International concludes the report with a series of recommendations to improve law and practice including: police restraint and identification during demonstrations, improving safeguards for those in custody and the creation of an independent and effective police complaints mechanism.  The Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers are reflected; specifically access to lawyers and legal services.
