The online newsportal InterAksyon mentions the case of a Philippine couple who claims to head the Communist Party. The couple has been imprisoned and their hearing will take place inside a police camp. In a motion, the couple cite an incident early this month wherein several of their lawyers were initially barred entry by police officers from proceeding to a room inside Camp Crame where their kidnapping and serious illegal detention cases were being heard. In a petition, the couple refers to the UN’s Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers:

“The difficulty of the lawyers of the accused-movants to enter Camp Crame to defend their clients and the intimidation which the  environment inside the camp tends to create, violate the United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, specifically, Sections 16 and 19 thereof. These affect the ability and the competency of the lawyers to defend their clients thereby violating the principle of due process”.
