The present report of Amnesty International is the result of two Amnesty International research missions to Mauritania in February/March 2008 and July 2008. This report shows how Mauritania has, according to Amnesty, taken no steps to prevent torture and prosecute the perpetrators of such acts and makes a series of recommendations based on Mauritania’s obligations to implement international human rights treaties. Amnesty states that international standards demand that defendants have access to a lawyer at all stages of the criminal procedure, such as the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers.
