This background report was written by the author at the request of ODIHR for the Workshop on Reform of the Legal Profession. With regard to the reform of the Bar in Tajikistan, the author refers to the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers. The Basic Principles lay down the necessity to adopt standards of professional conduct for defence lawyers. At present there are no general rules on professional conduct for legal professions including defence lawyers in Tajikistan.
