The present document of the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) is intended to outline the current state of the law in relation to access to legal counsel promptly after deprivation of liberty as a safeguard against torture and other ill-treatment. The APT refers several times to the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers with regard to the issue of the right to access to lawyers.
