The Iranian government should ensure that no lawyer is disciplined for defending clients and that disciplinary hearings are fair, but instead prominent rights lawyers are being detained and harassed. One of those lawyers is Nasrin Sotoudeh. She was arrested during a (peaceful) protest against a recent spate of acid attacks targeting women in the city of Esfahan. She did not get a fair trial and was banned from her legal profession. Lawyers such as Sotoudeh often get accused of damaging the government’s reputation. That is why several well-known lawyers from Iran have left the country. The UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers provide that lawyers must be allowed to carry out their work “without intimidation, hindrance, harassment or improper interference”. These Principles also require governments to ensure that lawyers can enter the profession and continue to practice without discrimination, including on the grounds of political of other opinions.
