The ICJ calls on Maldives to lift suspension of lawyers and “to respect the independence of the legal profession”. They thereby refer to the UN Basic Principles. UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers state that lawyers “are entitled to freedom of expression, which includes, among others, the right to take part in public discussion of matters concerning the law, the administration of justice and the promotion and protection of human rights”.
