The present report of the Lawyers Rights Watch Committee concerns the defamation case in Singapore of Joshua Benjamin Jeyaretnam. His 20 year career ended as Member of Parliament in Singapore and his 42 year career as a lawyer ended on July 23, 2001, when the Singapore Court of Appeal unanimously dismissed his bankruptcy appeal. The Committee refers to the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers with regard to the right to freedom of expression.
