Since 9 July 2015 Wang Yu has been held incommunicado by the Chinese authorities. Her friends and family have no idea where she is. Some members of her family have also been targeted. They are among the many affected by the crackdown on the legal profession that began mid 2015. It must be noted that an independent legal profession is integral to the development of an economic and political system which can be trusted. The article talks about violations of this “independence” and refers to Art. 16 of the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers.
