This paper aims to help lawyers fight torture, by highlighting what they and lawyers associations can do to help stop it. The paper cites rules against torture set out in international law and the safeguards required by law to help prevent torture. These international standards were drafted to apply to all legal systems in the world and take into account the rich diversity of legal procedures – they set out the minimum guarantees that all legal systems should provide. This paper also cites provisions against torture in Chinese law and China’s international obligations on this issue. Amnesty International recommends lawyers associations to promote set out in the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers.
