The present is a letter addressed to representatives of the State of Turkey expressing concern about the frequent use of arbitrary detention and judicial harassment against lawyers defending politically sensitive cases; particularly that in carrying out legitimate activities,  lawyers in Turkey are being prosecuted under terrorism law.  It calls for the State of Turkey to take all necessary measures to ensure protection by the competent authorities and exercise of the rights referred to in the present Declaration in conformity with Article 12.2 of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders and to ensure lawyers in Turkey do not face any act of harassment, conformity with the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders and the UN Principles on the Role of Lawyers and regional human rights instruments ratified by the Republic of Turkey, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights.
