The present report describes Amnesty International findings of their September 2011 visit to Ghana to investigate prison conditions and the impact they have on the human rights and well-being of prisoners. Areas of focus include: Ghana’s human rights obligations, current prison reforms and developments, violations of due process, access to lawyers, health care, women prisoners, treatment of prisoners, communication with the outside world and training, education and recreation with the prison system. The organization found that prisons in Ghana dramatically fail to meet international obligations and standards on prison conditions. Reference is made to the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers and specifically to special safeguards in criminal justice matters and the functioning of lawyers.
