The present report of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) concerns the trial of Mr. Muhannad Al-Hasania Syrian lawyer, President of the Syrian Organisation for Human Rights “Sawasiya”, Commissioner of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and Laureate of the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders 2010, who was arrested in Damascus by officers of the Syrian General Intelligence Service. The FIDH states that the right to defence requires that the accused be granted prompt access to his or her lawyers, and to be able to meet with them in private. It includes the right to communicate and consult with them without interception or censorship and in full confidentiality. With regard to that the FIDH refers to the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers.
