In the present document of Human Rights Watch, the organisation states that the prosecution of a labor union lawyer in western Kazakhstan on criminal charges of “inciting social discord” is incompatible with international human rights law. According to Human Rights Watch under the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, the Kazakh government has a duty to ensure that lawyers can carry out their work without intimidation, hindrance, or harassment and is required to ensure that they are not subject to prosecution or administrative, economic, or other sanctions for any action taken in accordance with recognized professional duties, standards, and ethics.
