The present report of Human Rights Watch (HRW) elaborates on the the Supreme State Security Court (SSSC) of Syria. HRW states that the SSSC does not comply with international human rights standards. The restrictions imposed on access to lawyers violate the rights of a defendant as guaranteed by the ICCPR, to which Syria acceded in 1969. HRW refers to the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers with regard to the issue of the right to counsel.
