The present document of Amnesty International covers the situation in Iran concerning executions. Amnesty International is calling on the Iranian government to abolish immediately and totally executions by stoning and to impose a moratorium on the death penalty pending the repeal or amendment of the Penal Code. All existing sentences of execution by stoning should be commuted. The UN Safeguards guaranteeing protection of the rights of those facing the death penalty call for a reduction of offences punishable by death to only the most serious crimes. Amnesty refers to the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers with regard to the issue of right to legal counsel.
