The present document of Amnesty International is about the violence that took place during the period surrounding the vote for independence of August 1999 in the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Timor- Leste, formerly known as East Timor),1 two separate processes for investigating, prosecuting and judging the crimes committed during this period were set in motion, one in Indonesia and one in Timor-Leste itself. In both countries, legislation was put in place specifically to create institutions and a legal framework in which these processes could take place. Amnesty refers to the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers with regard to the right to a fair trial.
