The present report highlights the main concerns and recommendations of both the Committee against Torture and Amnesty International in the light of Austria’s examination by the Committee against Torture and presents a number of cases of alleged ill-treatment received by Amnesty International. The requirement that people be given immediate or prompt access to a lawyer is enshrined in international human rights standards such as the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers. The failure of the Austrian authorities to ensure that the right to access to a lawyer is observed has been the subject of concern and recommendations by the Human Rights Committee and the CPT.
