These Guidelines of the Australian Human Rights Commission draw on relevant international minimum standards which detail what is required for humane detention consistent with respect for human dignity as required by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Commission refers to the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers with regard to the right to communicate with the diplomatic or consular representatives of the State of origin or nationality.
