The arrest of nine Turkish lawyers hours before they were due to represent 47 colleagues on trial for terrorism offences has been described as ‘Kafkaesque’ by the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales (BHRC) and the Bar Council. These organisations expressed deep concern and condemned the attacks. They thereby referred to the UN’s basic principles on the Role of Lawyers, principle 18 in particular.
