The Law Society of Upper Canada is gravely concerned about the arrest and charges against lawyer N. Surendran in Malaysia. He is a Malaysian lawyer for, among others, the official leader of the opposition, Anwar Ibrahim. Surendran made statements about the conviction of Ibrahim, alleging that the conviction was part of a political conspiracy. Therefore Surendran was charged with multiple counts of sedition under Malaysia’s Sedition Act. The Law Society of Upper Canada has concerns that these charges are unjustified because they stemmed from arguments presented in Surendran’s legal defense of Ibrahim. The Law Society point out Principles 16 and 23 of the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers.
