On January 23, the Day of the Endangered Lawyer, groups of law practitioners all of Europe held protest actions to decry the continuing human rights violations committed against lawyers, judges and law students in the Philippines. The Basic Principles on the Role of the Lawyer provides that governments of member states shall ensure that lawyers are able to perform all their professional functions without intimidation, hindrance, harassment or improper interference. They must be able to travel and consult with their clients freely both within their country and abroad. They shall not suffer, or to be threatened with, prosecution or administrative, economic or other sanctions for any action taken in accordance with recognized professional duties, standards and ethics. The statistics in this article show that the concern of the groups that held the protest is justified.
