In an opinion article in The Law Society Gazette, Jonathan Goldsmith of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe raises the position of Phil Shiner and his firm Public Interest Lawyers (PIL). Goldsmith understands that Mr Shiner experienced a spike in death threats after the defence secretary has ‘named and shamed’ certain lawyers (including him and his firm) in parliament at the end of the Al-Sweady inquiry. There is evidence that Mr Shiner has been receiving death threats for some time, which have been made more numerous as a result of the government’s action and the support it receives from its friends in the press. In his article, Goldsmith refers to articles 16, 17 and 18 of the UN’s Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers.
