The American Bar Association (ABA) wrote an open letter to Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on the prosecutions of attorney Eric Paulsen and Professor Azmi Sharom. The ABA notes that the United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers provide that lawyers, like other citizens, “are entitled to freedom expression, belief, association and assembly” and that they “have the right to take part in public discussion of matters concerning the law, the administration of justice and the promotion and protection of human rights.”
